Children’s language and overall development grows through connection: responsive conversations, playful back-and-forth interaction and small daily routines. 

Not pressure.

So today, here’s a simple idea: use 2 minutes of connection to nurture Portuguese.

🎲 Game: 3-Word Story
Pick 3 words (ex.: praia / gelado / avó) and use:
“Era uma vez…” → “Depois…” → “No fim…”

If your child gets stuck, guide with questions (don’t correct):
“Quem estava lá?” / “E depois?” / “Como se sentiu?”

This is also one of the best ways to prepare for summer in Portugal:
more confidence with grandparents, restaurants, family lunches, without turning Portuguese into a task.

E esse tempo também pode nutrir o português: com leveza, conversa e jogo.
Before summer, many parents quietly wonder: “Is my Before summer, many parents quietly wonder:
“Is my child actually making progress… or just attending classes?” 🤍

And the truth is: progress in European Portuguese doesn’t always look obvious.

It often looks like:
- understanding without needing translation
- speaking with less hesitation
- reading more independently
- writing with clearer intention
- and needing less support over time

At IEI, we don’t measure progress by perfection.
We look for clear, visible milestones, because:
→ children learn in stages
→ progress is not always linear
→ confidence grows before accuracy
→ and each child’s starting point matters

This is especially important for:
- bilingual children
- families living abroad
- families relocating to Portugal
- children learning Portuguese as PLH (Heritage Language) or PLE (Foreign Language)

Sometimes, the biggest mistake is expecting a child to show progress like an adult.

Real progress is often quieter.
But it is still real.
And it is measurable when we know what to look for.

PLH vs PLE isn’t about geography. It’s about fluen PLH vs PLE isn’t about geography. It’s about fluency + goal. 🌍
At IEI Portuguese School, we place children based on what they can actually do in European Portuguese, then choose the right method.

✅ Português Língua de Herança (PLH): literacy growth (reading & writing) once fluency is there

And yes, many students start in PLE and transition into PLH.

At IEI Portuguese School, we don’t place children by age alone, we place them by starting point + goals. ✅ That’s why we have two pathways (and a visual system kids understand fast):

Two pathways (not decided by geography) 

Português Língua Estrangeira (PLE) → when Portuguese is still being built (communication first) 

Português Língua de Herança (PLH) → when Portuguese already exists and we can grow literacy (reading + writing)

📌 And yes: a child can start in PLE and later move into PLH once fluency is there.

Levels your child can identify with 
- PLE levels = birds (ex.: Pintainhos, Galinhos, Galos, Andorinhas, Gaivotas)
- PLH levels = fish (ex.: Fanequinhas, Sardinhas, Carapaus, Bacalhaus, Atuns)

These aren’t “cute mascots”. They’re level markers, a simple way for a child (and a parent) to know: “Where are we now, and what’s the next step?” 🎒✨

Individual learning (not “one-size-fits-all”) 

Every student starts with a diagnostic assessment, then we define: level → individual plan → ongoing guidance → progress checkpoints 📊📚

Because kids don’t need pressure. They need structure + confidence + the right next step.

If your family spends part of the summer in Portug If your family spends part of the summer in Portugal, these moments are probably more real than you’d like. 🇵🇹

At the airport, your child is tired and defaults to English.
At grandma’s house, everyone wants them to speak Portuguese.
At the restaurant, they freeze.
At family lunch, the conversation moves too fast.
And then, at bedtime, something softens and Portuguese comes out more naturally.

This is more common than many parents think.

Here are 5 small things that help:

1. Airport
Don’t push. Start small.
A tired child needs safety before language.
2. Grandparents
Less pressure, more modelling.
Instead of “Say it in Portuguese”, model the sentence naturally.
3. Restaurant
Prepare one sentence before the moment.
Example: “Quero um gelado, por favor.”
4. Family lunch
Give your child one small role.
Example: “Conta à avó o que fizeste hoje.”
5. Bedtime
Use this moment.
Stories, repeated phrases and emotional connection help Portuguese feel easier.

Summer in Portugal can be more than a “test”.
It can be one of the best opportunities of the year for your child to reconnect with Portuguese.
